Biofilms

Lifeform Biofilm

Biofilms are organized microbial communities of bacteria and/or fungi. The biofilm offers advantages for the microorganisms, such as nutrition, recalcitrance against antibiotics, and protection from the host immune system.

Knowledge about biofilms is crucial for the development of effective prevention measures and therapeutic decision-making.

Routine methods of microbiology such as culturing of pathogens or molecular amplification techniques may identify the microbial species, but they are unable to detect the lifeform biofilm.
